Runners of HOU Newsletter #14
Welcome back to the Runners of HOU Newsletter! I hope everyone was able to get outside for a run this morning! I wasn’t, but the weather was beautiful (aka not unbearably hot and humid) when I walked my dogs.
🎧 PODCAST EPISODE: Louie Zuniga
Meet Louie Zuniga. Louis is a pilot, member of the City Centre and Freaks Running Clubs, and Team Catapult Ambassador. A Katy-area resident, we chat about his run club obsession - seriously, he has a run club every day of the week and more on his schedule - what being a pilot does to his training, and his five-year goal of qualifying for the Boston Marathon.

LOCAL RUNNING CLUB
City Centre Running Club is a free social running group that meets every Monday night for a 5k fun run followed by socializing with other fitness minded individuals. Built on the success of our sister running club BON Running Club in Rice Village, our goal is to create a fun fitness environment for all level runners while raising awareness and fundraising for local charities.
Freaks Run Club is a (mostly) weekly, after sunset run club that meets on Friday nights. Today is their sponsored night at Buffalo Bayou Brewing Company. Meet up with them at 7 p.m., run 4ish miles and then get your first round free!
RUNNING NERD LINKS
“Kipchoge: The Last Milestone” debuted in the U.S. this week and, of course, I’ve already watched it. While the reviews haven’t been great - The New York Times said you could skip the first half hour and Salon called it oddly underwhelming - I thoroughly enjoyed the behind the portions and the look into his training camp. Even if I did talk too much while watching according to the friend who watched with me. As with all running-related movies, if you are a runner I think you will enjoy it too. Who among us hasn’t watched Prefontaine AND Without Limits? So maybe the key is to read a review by other runners/endurance people because Outside loved it, calling the documentary a superfluous delight.
If you don’t subscribe to the Fueledbylolz Newsletter, you def should. Hollie’s weekly newsletter covers shoe and product reviews, among other running related topics. One of her most recent editions - An Updated Guide to Carbon Plated Shoes - takes a look at all things carbon plated and tries to answer the question of whether or not they are worth the hefty price tag.
Athing Mu and Courtney Frehrichs each broke their own American records at the Pre Classic last weekend! Frehrichs became the first American woman to run sub 9 in the women’s steeplechase when she finished second in 8:57.77 while Mu looked effortless in winning her 800m race in 1:55.04.
Terrible news out of UTMB. On Wednesday, a runner from the Czech Republic died after falling during the TDS race, which takes place in the Alps of Italy and France.
